Quality Ribbed Socks
私が作る靴下は厚手のものが多いこともあり、薄手の靴下も作って欲しいという要望を受けることがしばしばある。
基本的には何かしらのプロダクトをデザインうえで、他人の要望を聞き入れないようにしていることもあり、記憶にはとどめるが、大半は聞き流すようにしている。
ただ、何かのきっかけを機に要望を受けていたものを作りたくなることが稀にあり、この靴下は連続シルケットという糸を知り、この糸の長所を考えた結果、要望に応えられる靴下が作れるのではないかと思ったことがきっかけとなった。
この靴下のメインで使っている糸は綿の中でも超長綿と言われる最高クラスの糸であるスーピマコットンが用いられている。超長綿は繊維そのものが長く、糸を紡績する際に繊維の末端が少ない為、毛羽立ちが少なくなる傾向がある。繊維長が短いから粗悪とは考えてはいないが、一般的には繊維長が長い方が品質が良いとされている。
更に、その糸に対して２種類のシルケット加工を施しているのだが、先にも述べた通り、超長綿で紡績した糸は一般的な綿糸と比べると毛羽が少ない特徴があるため、その糸に対して２種類のシルケット加工を施すことは、個人的にはオバースペック気味な加工だと思っている。
ただ、ここまでの糸であるならば私はどうしても使いたいとまでは思わなかったと思う。私にとって重要なのは、この糸は２種類のシルケット加工が連続シルケットで施されていることだ。
連続シルケットを糸の状態で施せる設備を持っている工場は、日本に１社しかなく非常に希少性の高い設備であり、簡易に説明をすると一般的なシルケット加工と比べて、均一にシルケット加工を施すことが出来るため、毛羽が少なく、非常に均一性の高い発色の良い美しい糸に仕上がる。
私が知る限りこの糸は、ある種の最上級の綿糸と言えるのではないかと思っており、綿などでは表現が難しい高い光沢感を持った仕上がりとなっている。
Since many of the socks I make are quite thick, I frequently receive requests to create thinner ones. Generally, when designing a product, I tend to avoid incorporating other people’s suggestions. While I might keep such requests in mind, I usually let them pass. However, on rare occasions, something triggers my desire to create what was requested. In the case of this sock, after learning about a yarn called the "continuous mercerization" process and considering its strengths, I thought it might allow me to create a sock that meets those requests.
The main yarn used for this sock is Supima cotton, a top-tier extra-long staple cotton. Since extra-long staple cotton fibers are longer, there are fewer loose ends when the yarn is spun, which reduces fuzziness. I don’t believe shorter fibers are inherently of poor quality, but it is generally accepted that longer fibers indicate higher quality.
Moreover, two types of mercerization have been applied to this yarn. As mentioned earlier, yarn spun from extra-long staple cotton has less fuzz compared to regular cotton yarn, so applying two types of mercerization to such a yarn seems somewhat excessive to me.
That said, even with such a high-quality yarn, I wouldn’t have felt compelled to use it. What is important to me is that this yarn has undergone a rare, advanced continuous mercerization process with two types of mercerization.
There is only one factory in Japan with the equipment to perform continuous mercerization on yarn, making it a rare and valuable process. To explain it simply, compared to standard mercerization, continuous mercerization allows for more uniform application, resulting in a yarn with less fuzz, highly uniform, vibrant coloration, and an overall beautiful finish.
As far as I know, this yarn could be considered one of the finest cotton yarns available, with a high gloss finish that is difficult to achieve with regular cotton.
